Newborn screening helps us find babies who have certain serious medical conditions so that they can begin treatment right away. In most cases, these babies look normal and healthy at birth. They usually do not begin showing symptoms until a few weeks or months later.
Newborn screening is a public health program of screening in infants shortly after birth for conditions that are treatable, but not clinically evident in the newborn period. Nearly all babies will have a simple blood test to check for disorders that are not apparent immediately after delivery. Some of these disorders are genetic, metabolic, blood, or hormone-related.
